Minister of Education and Sports for Higher Education, John Muyingo, has appealed to students to take advantage of scholarships from the Algerian government for the academic year 2023/24 to further their studies.
Muyingo explained that the scholarships whose fields of study include dental surgery, science of nature and life, process engineering, civil engineering electronics engineering, geology–geophysics, urban management techniques, computer science and communication sciences, among others, are in line with Uganda’s science and technology agenda.
The minister who expressed disappointment over the reluctance of the public including religious institutions to embrace government programs like those in education, stressed that it is through education that Ugandans can eliminate poverty.
“We have 500 scholarships for students to study in Algeria, but people are not applying. We shall not eliminate poverty without embracing education. I appeal to religious leaders and institutions to mobilise others and take advantage of such offers,” Muyingo told New Vision in an interview on April 4, 2023.
Besides education, Muyingo also called on the public to embrace other government programs aimed at getting Ugandans out of poverty.
He cited programs such as the Parish Development Model, noting that those who embraced the program in time have already received funds.
