This article was first published in Toto Magazine on May 12, 2021

Motocross is an off-road sport where riders use motorcycles to race. At times, it involves doing repairs during the race. It is a sport that physically demands a lot of training. However, this did not stop home-schooled Larry Ssekamwa from engaging in the sport. Sandra Kyalitesa talked to him.

How old are you?

I am seven years old.

When did you get interested in motocross?

My dad introduced me to riding when I was five years old because I used to travel with him. I asked him to take me training.

Have you won any awards so far?

I won the MX Motocross Championship that was organised in Busiika recently.

Do you have future plans in this game?

I want to remain a rider and I will keep training.

How do you balance school and training?

I study from Monday to Friday then go for training on Saturdays and Sundays.

Who is your role model in motocross?

I admire Stav Orland and Maxime Van Pee, the captain of Ugandan riders.

Have you suffered any injuries?

Yes, I was riding and got neck pain.

How did you overcome this injury?

My parents took me to the hospital and I got treatment.

Do you do any other activity apart from motocross?

I am home-schooled so my programme is not so tight. I go swimming every Wednesday and I get a chance to play with my friends.

How do you feel about being a motocross champion?

I am so happy. I thank my daddy Edson Ssekamwa and my mummy Irene Ssekamwa for taking me for trainings every weekend.
