The Ndejje University Consortium has appointed Church of Uganda’s Bishop Dr. Hannington Mutebi Nsubuga as its chancellor.
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Mutebiwho is the Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese, was installed during the university’s 23rd graduation ceremony last month. The event was graced by the Vice President, Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo.
Dr. Mutebi becomes the second Bishop to assume the chancellor’s office since the establishment of Ndejje University in 1992.
His appointment follows the passing on of former chancellor and agriculture minister Dr. Kisamba Mugerwa last January.
Dr. Kisamba was also one of the founders of Ndejje University. Previous chancellors include Bishop Yokana Mukasa, Prof. Steven Talitwala (2006) and Dr Kisamba Mugerwa (2013- 2021).
Rt. Rev. Dr. Mutebi will be the titular head of the university, according to the University Charter. His duties include presiding over all ceremonial assemblies of the university and confer degrees, diplomas, certificates, titles and distinctions. Bishop Mutebi will also perform an overall supervisory role over the university affairs during his four-year term of office. He is eligible for reappointment as provided by the charter administrative instruments.
The Vice-President congratulated the new chancellor and asked him to steer the university to greater heights.
“We have our trust in you and hope that you will guide the university well on its journey to continued development,” she said.
“We need many more good people like you in several institutions around the country to ensure that that we are on the right course. We have all the confidence that you will do a great job as chancellor of this university.”
Exceptional Performance
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eriabu Lugujjo said Bishop Mutebi has a long track record of exceptional performance. Prof. Lugujjo added that Bishop Mutebi is being counted on to take the university to a higher level during his tenure as chancellor.
The state minister for higher education, Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo also congratulated Bishop Mutebi upon his appointment. “The Rt. Rev. Mutebi is a highly educated person and we are confident that he will help Ndejje University continue growing.”
Bishop Mutebi’s Plans
In his speech after the installation, Bishop Mutebi pledged to play his role diligently. “I will do all in my power to promote Ndejje University in all circles where I have influence while fostering harmony among all stakeholders of the university. I will stand with the Board of Trustees, the Council and other stakeholders to pray for its continued growth and prosperity,” he said.
He also pledged to have the university connected to several other partners globally and within the country. He also promised to ensure that the university grows strong in the use of ICT. “All the lecturers in this university conduct lectures online; and with an increase in the number of courses offered, improved connectivity will be pivotal to the university, extending its services by casting a wider net in this digital age.”
Bishop Mutebi is also determined, to ensure that the university keeps strong in sports and in teaching of engineering in the country.

Who is Bishop Dr Hannington Mutebi Nsubuga?
Bishop Mutebi hails from Gayaza town in Kampala. He had his initial theological education at Uganda Martyrs’ Seminary, Namugongo, before proceeding to Daystar University, Nairobi and the Trinity School for Ministry at Ambridge, Pennsylvania US, for his doctoral studies in philosophy. He has served several churches including St Luke, Kibuye; Bunnamwaaya Church of Uganda; St Paul’s Cathedral; Namirembe Kisuggu Church of Uganda and All Saints’ Cathedral. Currently, he is the Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese. He has been a Born-again Christian since March 15, 1981. He is married to Milly Mutebi; a registered nurse. The couple has raised five children.
About Ndejje University
The university is owned by six dioceses which include Luwero, Mityana, West Buganda, Central Buganda, Mukono and Namirembe. Ndejje University has three campuses, that is, in Luwero which is the main campus. Others are the Kampala campus and a Post Graduate school in Rubaga division, also in Kampala.
