How You Can Avoid Sexual Abuse

By Francis Emukule

Sexual abuse is the act of forcefully involving someone in sexual acts. Children are not supposed to get involved in any sexual acts. Unfortunately, many children go through this and they just keep quiet about it.

What can you do to avoid sexual abuse?

  • Know the warning signs Children should be aware of the signs of sexual abuse such as a person touching them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable or asking them to keep secrets about their interactions.
  • Speak up If you are being sexually abused, tell a trusted adult such as a parent, teacher or a counsellor.
  • The “no, go, tell” rule This means saying “no” to the abuser, running away or telling a trusted adult what happened.
  • Know the difference between good and bad touches: You have the right to say ‘no’ to any touch that makes you feel uncomfortable.
  • Trust your instincts: If a situation does not feel right to you, you should trust your instincts and remove yourself from it as soon as possible.
  • Avoid risky places: There are certain places that children should avoid going to so as to reduce the risk of sexual abuse. These include private or isolated areas such as deserted buildings, abandoned houses or lonely parks and playgrounds.
  • Do not go to homes of strangers, even if the strangers seem nice or offer you nice things.
  • Be cautious about interacting with people online. Avoid going into chat rooms or social media groups that are not supervised by an adult.
  • Avoid parties or events with adults you do not know: Do not attend parties or events where you do not know the people in attendance. You should always go with a trusted adult or with a group of good friends.
  • Always be open about your movements. Let people know where you are and who you are with. Keep safe
