MBARARA – Headteachers of schools under the Ankole Anglican Diocese have requested the education ministry to organise national debating competitions.
Nyakayojo SS headteacher Geoffrey Tumwebaze says the ministry should write to all district education officers to take part in the exercise.
Mbarara High School deputy headteacher Naboth Dalton Turyasingura proposes that as a way of motivating schools to participate in debating competitions winning learners should be given rewards.
The school heads have also asked the Church of Uganda to organise inter-diocese debating competitions.
They made their call during the climax of the second Edition Ankole Diocese Bishop’s Tournament, which took place at Nyakayojo SS in Mbarara City on Tuesday.
The tournament was organised by Ankole Diocese Bishop the Rt. Rev. Dr. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa. The competition aimed at giving young learners a platform to develop their talent.
Ankole Diocese education secretary the Rev. Agasha Muhwezi said 13 secondary schools under the diocese participated in the competition.
Mbarara High victorious
Mbarara High School was crowned the champion of this year’s competition and was given a trophy after defeating Rwentanga Farm Institute in the finals of the competition.
Mwesigwa said he organised the tournament after realising that many people are getting many challenges including failing job interviews because they were not equipped with communication skills during their time in school.
“I encourage all young people to be broadminded and go for skills that will help them win arguments for development. We have people who come to the national Parliament and they become a shame. Some of them cannot pronounce well English words,” Mwesigwa added.
He encouraged young people to work hard to perfect their communication skills.
