Jemimah Nabukeera Nyaketcho sat her Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) exams in pain, having undergone a series of operations at CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital following a nasty bus accident on the Gulu Highway while she was six years of age.
A bus that was overtaking another vehicle knocked a taxi as Nabukeera and her mother were alighting. She was dragged along the tarmac for almost 100 metres, breaking her left leg and also tearing off the flesh.
However, this did not deter the 14-year-old from getting aggregate five at Rafa Primary School in Luwero district in the PLE whose results were released on Friday.
“I am greatly relieved. I wanted to become a lawyer but with these results and the pain I have been through, I want to become a surgeon,” she told New Vision. Her left leg is full of screws. “My last surgery was done shortly before I sat for the exams so that the affected leg could match with my right leg that is growing, in length. My parents have sold everything to see me get to this stage,” Nabukeera said.
She is grateful for her relative Ivan Kyeyune who came to her aid and paid her fees.
In an interview with New Vision, Kyeyune appealed to well-wishers to come to the aid of the family because they now do not know what will befall her next.
“She is an extremely bright person who despite her education being affected by the constant hospital visits had performed very well. Each operation costs about sh4m and this depends on the pain she is feeling,” he said.
Nabukeera is appealing to any good-hearted Ugandan to get her a scholarship in a very good school so that she studies and realises her dream of becoming a surgeon. Her family can be reached on 0782803160.
