Reduce Friction

In this easy experiment, we are going to use straws to reduce friction and easily move a heavy book

What You Will Need

• Heavy book
• Several drinking straws

Instruction

1. Place the book on a flat surface and slide it a distance of a about a foot.
2. Observe the amount of strength required to move the book.
3. Place several straws under the book.
4. Now observe the amount of strength required to move the book a distance of about a foot.
5. The straws roll and reduce the friction

What Happening?

The straws are smooth and reduce the friction between the book and the flat surface. This reduction of friction will allow the book to move much more easily when placed on top of the smooth straws.
