Make A Rainbow
In this experiment, we are going to make a rainbow
Instructions
- Pour three quarters of water into the baking pan.
- Find a sunny spot.
- Place the mirror in the water and lean it against the edge of the baking pan.
- Now direct the mirror’s reflection onto the white piece of paper.
- You will see different colours of the rainbow.
What is happening?
When the white sunlight shines into the water, it bends. White light is a combination of all the visible colours, so when white light bends, all of its parts also bend. These parts or colours (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet) bend at a different angle because each colour travels at a different speed in water. When the mirror reflects back the light out of the water, it has been broken up from refraction into the full rainbow of colours that you can see on the piece of white paper.
