- Empty soda bottle
- Straw
- Water
Instructions
- Pour water into the bottle about three quarters full.
- Put the straw in the bottle and blow across the top of the straw.
- Now lower the straw further into the water and blow across the top
What is Happening?
As you move the straw up and down inside the bottle, the level of water in the straw changes. This change in water level results in different lengths of air columns in the straw. As you blow across the top of the straw, the column of air in the straw vibrates and creates the sound that you hear. As you adjust the length of the air column, the amount of air vibrating changes and results in a different sound.
