KAMPALA – Government has announced a series of scholarships to support the education of female and special needs education trainees in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

The move is part of efforts to build affirmative action for the groups.

Ketty Lamaro, the permanent secretary Ministry of Education and Sports made the announcement on Wednesday during the release of the 2023 November/ December exams in Kampala.

She noted that the scholarship would provide an opportunity for the trainees to pursue scarce TVET courses.

“This will help to bridge the gender gap by increasing the number of female trainees in TVET institutions across the country,” she said.

In a speech read for her at the event by Higher Education minister, Dr JC Muyingo, First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Mrs Janet Museveni, said although many female students are enrolling in TVET institutions every year, their numbers are not enough to meet the demands of the skills the country needs.

“I am impressed by the ever increasing number of trainees enrolling for TVET programs– especially the 15, 705 females out of a total of 52,373 trainees who have acquired competences in various occupations and are ready to join the world work. However, I would like to request the public to send more girls to vocational training programs. This will result in an increase in the number of youth who can now create their own jobs,” she said.
