The Japanese government has announced a new scholarship programme as part of celebrations to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations with Uganda.
The programme, according to Japan, targets Ugandans who are seeking to build careers in tourism and hospitality industries.
In a May 12 call for applications under the new scheme, the Japanese embassy said this scholarship programme is aimed at producing “highly skilled” Ugandans to work in the tourism and hospitality sectors.
Tourism remains a major foreign exchange earner for the country, providing a substantial number of direct and indirect jobs to Ugandans.
The successful applicants under this programme, which is part of the Japanese ministry of education, culture, sports, science and technology scholarship (MEXT) schemes, will be trained in Japan. “…the embassy of Japan is pleased to announce the introduction of a new scholarship scheme under MEXT Scholarships (2023) for learners in the tourism and hospitality industry called specialised training college students,” the statement reads.
