It is a new year where different sports associations and federations, are expected to come out with new strategies aimed at making progressive development in the running of their activities.
And Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) is one such sports body that has already laid their new plans on the table to effect its major objective of talent identification and development.
From this, the 2023 USSSA competitions have been increased with beach disciplines of volleyball, soccer and woodball for both boys and girls as well as the board/mind games of chess, ludo and scrabble and these will be in the USSSA Ball Games II.
USSSA athletes have been competing in 15 disciplines; football, basketball, volleyball, netball, athletics, badminton, table tennis, handball, tennis, rugby 15s, rugby 7s and hockey, with dancesport, woodball, girls rugby and basketball 3×3 having been added last year.
And with the inclusion of the six, the Uganda secondary school athletes will now compete in 21 disciplines.
“It is our intention that we fulfil our promise of extending talent identification and development in schools by expanding the existing competitions to include more of the disciplines we have not been competing in,” said USSSA president Justus Mugisha.
In other USSSA reforms for the year 2023, athletics will remain at district level but will have the medley and mixed relays introduced and competition will still move to the zonal level
