A camel can go for weeks without food or water. When food and water become scarce, the camel gets energy from the fats in its hump. The longer the animal goes without food or water, the smaller its hump becomes. A camel can carry very heavy loads and its ability to go without food or water for a long time makes it a very useful animal in the desert
