A shark is a fish and, therefore, it breathes through the gills. The shark uses its gills to extract oxygen from water and expel carbon dioxide from its body. As water passes over the gills,small capillaries allow oxygen to enter the bloodstream. Unlike ordinary fish such as tilapia, a shark does not have a protective covering (operculum) over the gills.
