Science Experiment

Can the Ocean Freeze?

In this experiment, we are going to investigate if the ocean can freeze

What you will need

  • Marker
  • Spoon
  • Water
  • Two large plastic bowls
  • Salt
  • Freezer

Instructions

  1. Use the marker to label the bowls “Bowl 1” and Bowl 2.”
  2. Pour four cups of water into each bowl.
  3. Add two tablespoons of salt slowly into Bowl 1. Stir until dissolved.
  4. Put both of the bowls in the freezer and leave overnight.
  5. Record your results the next day.

What is Happening?

Fresh water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius. When salt is added to water, it lowers the freezing point of the water by several degrees. The salt water can still freeze, but it will require a temperature lower than 0 degrees Celsius to do so.
