The Uganda I Would Like To See In The Next 10 Years

(This article was first published in Toto Magazine on October 5, 2022)

By Jovita Mirembe

On Sunday, October 9, Uganda will mark 60 years of self-rule. In 1894, Britain colonised Uganda and British governors ruled it on behalf of the Queen of England. Since Independence on October 9, 1962, the country has gone through political, social and economic changes. Children shared with Jovita Mirembe what they want Uganda to look like in the next ten years.

Elvis Atwiine, City Parents School

There are several bad roads in Uganda which is a cause of accidents. The potholes too have caused many accidents. In the next ten years, I would like Uganda to have all murram roads tarmacked

Shem John Sikuku, Mbale Tower Primary School

I want to see Uganda looking like the United Kingdom, especially London city. It is developed and has good infrastructure such as the transport network and buildings.

Linda Tendo Kamahoro, Entebbe Education Centre

In the next ten years, I would like Uganda to have piped water in all parts of the country. More so, I would like this water to be free because the water source is Lake Victoria, which is a natural source.

Morris Hamya, Nakasero primary school

I would like a Uganda that looks like Wakanda in the movie, Black Panther. Wakanda was so beautiful. Everything there operated using smart phones, including the selling and buying of things in the market. It would be nice to buy onions in Kasubi market using a smart phone.

Janet Melanie Namakula, City Parents School

Most of our leaders are corrupt. They have diverted funds to do projects that benefit them individually. These funds would have helped in the development of social services such as schools and hospitals, I want to see a corrupt-free Uganda.

Neria Ninah Nabaasa, City Parents School

There is high crime rate in Uganda today. It is probably due to the poverty in the country. In the next ten years, I would like to see every town, suburb and village having security cameras installed. I also want the Government to continue supporting the poor and needy citizens.

Lynnette Kaitesi, Entebbe Education Centre

In the next ten years, I would like Uganda to have free education for all university students so that we can have many graduates. There are many bright students from poor families who cannot afford university education.

Prosper Israel Kayongo, City Parents Primary School

I would like to see a Uganda with better environment. The weather has changed a lot because of bad human practices like cutting down of trees, over grazing and swamp reclamation. In a bid to solve this problem, the Government should put in place a law that emphasises afforestation and the construction of industries with green belts. This will reduce on environmental changes.

Christine Nassozi, Meko Learning Centre-Kigombya Mukono

Uganda is a rich country where minerals have been discovered. I want to see the minerals extracted and our economy boosted. This will cause the shilling to gain value. I also wish the minerals benefit everyone.
