Why Does Cooking Gas Have A Bad Smell?

Samuel Mwesigwa, Zigoti Primary School

Cooking gas in its natural state has no smell. The foul smell characteristic of cooking gas is a chemical called ethyl mercaptan added to it. The chemical is added to the gas to make it easy to detect a leak. (Someone can easily smell it when it leaks). Cooking gas, also known as liquefied petroleum gas, is very dangerous and can cause explosions and terrible fire when it leaks.
